Speakers Bureau

Looking for a speaker for your club or group meeting?  Expose your group to all that is happening at Lauritzen Gardens with an informative presentation by a member of our speakers bureau!  We have a colorful and informative slide presentation that can be adapted in length.  It explains the history of the garden, provides a virtual tour of the gardens and visitor and education center and provides details on garden events, the garden membership program and more.

 Jim Keeprs of Nebraska Arborists Association (NAA) will speak to your garden clubs on pruning trees and the need to employ certified arborists when doing tree care.  He also has his own landscaping business where he does landscape designs, installation, Maintenance and tree care business.  To contact him e-mail him at jkeepers@msn.com

 
Marian Maas, Ph.D., is Project Manager of the Papillion Creek Watershed Project.  This project is an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant for the improvement of water quality in the Papillion Creek streams.  Marian’s public outreach program discusses ways to reduce stormwater runoff and pollutants from entering our streams, and focuses on the use of individual and neighborhood rain gardens, stream buffers, and native plantings.  In addition to controlling stormwater runoff, rain gardens add aesthetic value and increase restorative natural greenspace to our urban landscape.

Charges for Speaking Engagements

Thank you for your interest in a speaking engagement by a member of the NSA staff.  We greatly appreciate the opportunity to address your group!  Please note the charges for speaking engagements necessary to meet operational expenses. 

NSA Associate Members

No speaker fee or mileage reimbursement will be charged to groups that hold an associate membership with NSA, or that become an associate member (dues @ $100/year) prior to the engagement.

University-Related Groups

No speaker fee will be charged to groups associated with state-funded programs of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, including master gardener training and other events sponsored by UNL Extension, or events sponsored by the UNL Nebraska Forest Service.  Reimbursement of roundtrip mileage will be charged at the current UNL rate ($0.485).

Other Groups

The following charges apply, payable to the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum:

§  minimum $50 speaker fee

§  Round trip mileage at current UNL rate ($0.485/mile) if round trip distance exceeds 100 miles.

I will discuss soil preparation, design features, and maintenance tips for prairie-style landscapes. Proven Perennial Performers (native and hardy exotics): This presentation will discuss the use of hardy herbaceous perennials to create a low maintenance landscape. Focus will be on plants that provide seasonal interest with minimal use of fertilizer, pest control, and supplemental watering. On Fire for Phlox: No group of American plants can equal the genus Phlox for its importance in the wild and in the garden.  Its sixty-some species decorate and often define plant communities up and down the continent, yet no American genus has enjoyed a richer history in the gardens of the world.  In this presentation NSA director Jim Locklear will highlight ten years of travel across the United States in preparation for his forthcoming book on Phlox. Nebraska Statewide Arboretum

Every Town a Garden: The vision, values and aspirations of NSA are summed up in the theme, Every Town a Garden, which declares our dedication to the greening of every community in the state, making each a more attractive, healthy, vital place to live, work and visit.  This presentation will provide an overview of the more than 80 public gardens and 500 community landscape projects supported by NSA across Nebraska. Sustainable Landscapes: How and why do we need to change the way we think about the landscape to make it more sustainable in the light of environmental and economic issues being faced today? Garden Treasures from America’s Grasslands: The NSA GreatPlants® Program promotes the use of water-conserving plants and practices in the landscape, and has introduced many native Nebraska plants into horticulture. This presentation will take the audience on a ramble through the Great Plains on a search for the region’s most beautiful plants and inspiring landscapes. Restoration, Rehabilitation & Healing Through Therapeutic Landscape Design & Horticultural Therapy: A PowerPoint presentation that uses text and photographs to explore the relationship between contact with nature and multidimensional wellness and its relevance in today’s society and healthcare environment. Attendees are introduced to the benefits of gardens and related research, horticultural therapy and design characteristics of therapeutic gardens.  50-60 minutes.  Audience: consumers, gardeners and garden volunteers, Master Gardeners, students, landscape designers and healthcare providers (goals and objectives available for formal inservice presentations). After Lewis and Clark: Journeys across Unknown Nebraska. Nebraskans are proud of their connection to the monumental Lewis and Clark Expedition.  But while the Corps of Discovery only brushed the eastern shore of Nebraska, two later and lesser-known expeditions broke free of the Missouri River and plunged westward along the Platte, traversing the heart of Nebraska.  Like Lewis and Clark, the Long Expedition (1820) and the Wyeth Expedition (1834) each brought new species of plants and animals to light, and produced journals that provide intriguing images of untrammeled Nebraska. Healthy Yards, Healthy People AND Healthy Parks, Healthy People:  Our critical need for nature and the challenges we are faced with.  A better understanding of our need for nature leads us to a new ways of thinking about landscape design and stewardship.   Both presentations present some broader scale issues but the first focuses on residential issues/solutions and the second on broader community issues.
